Filling in application forms.
Most housing associations will want you to formally apply for a position by filling out an application form. If you've filled in forms before, then you know they're all too easy to mess up. Writing in the wrong section, running out of space - just a few reasons to bin it and start again. This guide may seem like common sense, but it's been created to help you sell yourself and get that all important interview.
Do your research
Take a look at an association’s profile page (hyperlink to featured recruiters) and website before applying.
Take time to read the job description and person specification (hyperlink to browse of jobs). Ensure your answers reflect these needs.
Experience, skills and knowledge
Knowledge gained through a relevant hobby or voluntary work is just as important as that gained 'on-the-job'. So include it! It's also important to show how you meet the key areas of experience. This can be personal, as well as that gained through work, home, voluntary and other activities. Make sure you put your most recent position/work experience/qualifications first.
Referees
You should give the names and addresses of two referees. One should be your current employer. If you don't have a job at the moment then please put your last employer instead.
What if you run out of space?
Feel free to continue on a separate sheet of standard plain or lined paper. But don't forget to label it with the same section title you're spilling over from and attach it to the back of the application form.
What not to include
Please don't include CVs or any additional information other than a covering letter.
What if you’re filling in an online application?
The same rules apply as if you were writing one out by hand. However, with an online form, you have the advantage of being able to save it at any point and come back to it later. So, if you’re not sure about a question or just want to sleep on an answer, it’s ideal. Just make sure you send it in before the deadline.
