Lives in the Midlands brightened by Stars in the Sky.

09/05/08

Residents living in a Friendship Care and Housing's Alvechurch care home have discovered a new way to get out and about and meet new people. Stars in the Sky is a new project based upon an award-winning initiative created specifically for adults with learning difficulties. Led by Tom Long, Stars in the Sky organises social events and meetings for its members, giving them the opportunity to meet others in similar circumstances. It helps people meet new friends, go out on dates and attend activities that can result in long-term partnerships.

Registered Care Manager at Alvechurch Road, Beverley Hayles, said:

"Stars in the Sky is an excellent idea and can change people's lives. The events provide opportunities for our residents to create an active social life and to meet someone special. Our residents, who are aged between 40 and 62, are really excited about it."

To ensure all goes well, each event or meeting is supervised by Tom Long and staff from the care home. Providing confidentiality, support and advice, Stars in the Sky has a strict policy in place to see that members are protected from potential abuse.

Stars in the Sky organises regular events and outings including eating out and visiting tourist attractions such as the Sea Life Centre. The original project was set up by Lolita Jones and Pauline Geipel, who are also adults with learning difficulties. Truly, Madly Deeply, a Channel 4 television programme featured Stars in the Sky in 2006 after the project won awards for its forward thinking initiative and now Birmingham City Council is giving its support to this much-needed facility for residents in and around the city.
