290 affordable homes for Derby
20/03/08
Friendship Care and Housing has been awarded £7.5million in government funding from the National Affordable Housing Programme for 2008-11. This means their plan to build 290 quality homes has passed an essential milestone. That’s great news for communities in Derby needing affordable housing.

Jonathan Driffill, Managing Director at Friendship Care and Housing commented:
“It is a fact that there is a chronic shortage of affordable housing in our region. The size of this award will go some way to help reduce this shortage. This is a superb result!”
Friendship Care and Housing is part of Longhurst Group. Longhurst Group submitted an application for funding for a total of 11 regional social landlords, including Friendship. The total funds awarded amount to £40m – the 10th highest national award, which will contribute to the cost of building over 1000 new homes across the Midlands during the next 3 years.
Longhurst Group’s funding application successfully met the Housing Corporation's new standards for value and quality. The application outlined the need for housing to be delivered to a high design standard with a reduction in carbon footprint, contributing to a saving of more than 90,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
The Housing Corporation have £8.4billion available for the 08/11 period. The total funding will provide at least 155,000 new affordable homes in the next three years, almost double the number of affordable homes compared to 2006-08. More than 100,000 of these will be for affordable rent, and more than 50,000 for affordable sale through various Government HomeBuy initiatives.
