Celebrating a community hero.
26/02/08Coventry's leading housing group is urging city residents to take a leaf out of the book of a community stalwart. Despite suffering from two strokes last year, Thelma Hammond, has battled to secure new fencing for nearby residents, a zebra crossing and a community noticeboard.
The 72 year old has been supported in her work by Whitefriars Housing Group which has helped with funding bids and the printing of leaflets. The funding for the community noticeboard has been provided by Community Champions, based in Nuneaton.
Whitefriars has marked Thelma's work in the community with a special presentation including a bunch of flowers and a letter of thanks from the Association's Chairman Peter Lacy.
Thelma, who used to be chair of the local community association, said:
"When I was elected in 2002, along with Mr David Warwick as my Vice Chair, we made up our minds to do the best we could for the estate and the people that live on it. We had to really fight to find funding for the noticeboard and were delighted when the Community Champions Trust came to our rescue.
"To anyone out there thinking of doing something like this I say stick at it, and ask for help. Try your local councillor, and your housing office. They are all willing to help. Good luck to all who try. It is hard work, but worth it in the end."
Each year almost 400 residents across Coventry volunteer to help Whitefriars improve their services and solve community problems.
Joanna Selby, Customer Involvement Officer at Whitefriars, said:
"Every street would ideally have a Thelma. She is truly dedicated to making lives better for others, and has made a real difference to so many.
"My son attends the school local to the area, and so I know how dangerous Woodway Lane felt before the zebra crossing, that Thelma campaigned for, was installed.
"As a member of Whitefriars' Customer Involvement Team, I'm very keen to encourage people to have their say in how their community is run. Thelma proves that your voice will be heard."
Whitefriars Housing Group runs an annual competition in the city to recognise good neighbours. Next year's award will be launched in April 2008.
