Training the next generation of trades-people.

Three young Coventry residents are picking up skills for the future, thanks to a new apprentice scheme. HomeWorks, Whitefriars repairs and maintenance service, recruited the trio to boost the skills within the team and offer the young people the chance to build a new and valuable career.

18 year-old Andy Nestor joins the team as an apprentice electrician. Whilst 17 year olds David Warner and Luke Greaves are well on their way to securing maintenance operations (multi-skill) apprenticeships. All three attended a special event last night, where their parents, City College Coventry and Whitefriars, all signed a pledge to commit to their future.

The apprentices are the first craft students recruited by HomeWorks. Each has been allocated a mentor to help them through their course and have a day release at college each week. They have been provided with a free toolkit and safety clothing to get their apprenticeship off to a flying start.

David, one of the new recruits, said:

"I am really pleased to have this opportunity. I was looking for a hands-on job that would also enable me to gain qualifications, so this is the perfect balance.

"I'm looking forward to working with Whitefriars and learning from the HomeWorks Team."

Whitefriars worked with City College Coventry to fill the three apprentice vacancies.

Peter Brady, Operations Manager for Whitefriars' Training and Development Agency enthused:

"We are delighted to give these young people this opportunity, and we are sure it is one they will reap the rewards of. Apprenticeship schemes such as this one offer a win-win situation for those involved. We get eager young people, and in return for their hard work, they get new skills and a wage along the way.

"The three lads went through a rigorous assessment and interview to be awarded these positions, so they have already done extremely well. We look forward to working with them through their apprenticeship."
