Helping young people out of the care system.
24/01/08
HomeZone and their local authority partners are helping some of the UK's most vulnerable young people get out of care and into a property of their own.
The initiative involves 16-18 year olds living in a 'training flat' where they are given support and training on how to run a home, pay bills, conduct a tenancy and be part of a community. They are also coached in telephone, interview and other communication skills necessary for dealing with various agencies like landlords and finding a suitable home etc.
Each young person that completes the process will receive a certificate of achievement that they can use in the future when they apply for a permanent home. All who've been through the initiative have found the experience rewarding and enjoyable. It's proving to be a great success.
Amanda Reid, HomeZone's Managing Director, commented:
"This is a fantastic initiative for these young adults, and we believe that supporting them to learn new skills for independence is vital to their success in becoming good tenants, good neighbours and achieving their personal goals when they leave social care."
